Update #6

Important update on the Valley Kayaks Presents World Championships of Surf Kayaking – please contact us before making any new arrangements

September 12

Late today, the Dare County Emergency Management Control Group announced an initial schedule under which non-residents will be allowed to visit Hatteras Island. The impact of hurricane Irene varied across different areas of the island, but is has become clear that the  northern villages of Rodanthe, Waves, and Salvo suffered the most significant effects. As a result, visitors will not be allowed to occupy rental housing in this area until sometime after September 29. In addition, road repairs are unlikely to be completed prior to early October. Until that time, therefore, the only means of access for visitors will be by ferries from Swan Quarter or Cedar Island to Ocracoke Island followed by a second ferry from Ocracoke to Hatteras Village.

The bulletin from Emergency Management has the effect of an evacuation order for Rodanthe, Waves, and Salvo. Based on this announcement and the strong possibility that Hatteras Island may not be accessible by highway for much of the contest period, it is necessary to arrange alternate housing north of Oregon Inlet and to relocate the competition to Jennette’s Pier in the Town of Nags Head. As a result, persons who had arranged for rental units in Rodanthe, Waves, or Salvo should contact the realtor through whom you made reservations and determine how your reimbursement will be handled.

Those who rented in Avon, Buxton, Frisco, or the village of Hatteras also should contact their realtors to determine your options under the current circumstances.

The organizing committee is working with realtors in Nags Head to secure a block of rental units of the
same quality and price as units that participants had reserved on Hatteras Island. We expect to reach a final agreement on this housing within a day or two, so we are asking you not to make commitments for new rental units before contacting us.

To obtain the information we need to plan this arrangement, we need each person planning to attend Worlds to SEND US AN EMAIL MESSAGE with the following information:

• Names of the persons in your party (both competitors and non-competitors)
• Location of lodging previously reserved on Hatteras Island (i.e., name of the town)
• Name of the realty company used to secure lodging
• Arrival and check-out dates
• Price of base rent, taxes and other fees, and rental insurance

We also ask that anyone who has not yet booked lodging contact us.

In addition to this posting on the webpage, we will be emailing individual participants to ensure that we reach anyone who misses the general announcement. Please respond promptly to our request for information so that we can complete these plans as quickly as possible.

As soon as the new housing arrangements are in place, we will provide an update with instructions on procedures to follow in making your reservations.
